Before joining ID John worked for seven years as the Scottish Senior Investigator for the Federation Against Copyright Theft. He lobbied for and then contributed to an enforcement and prosecution strategy for intellectual property crime at FACT which led to enforcement and prosecutions for IP crime becoming routine across Scotland.
John served 32 years in the Scottish Police Service, mainly in Strathclyde, retiring as a Superintendent. In the 1990s as a Detective Chief Inspector based in Paisley, John designed and implemented a strategic plan to tackle a spate of murders and racketeering linked with the illicit drugs trade; this plan was later adopted across other police forces.
Later in his police service John concentrated on Special Operations and also worked abroad on terrorist and international fraud enquiries as well as in Northern Ireland.
John McGowan is a member of the Association of British Investigators Limited.
